Purchasing a new cooling system for you home can be a nerve racking task. Not only do you have to choose the type and model of air conditioner you want but you also have to decide from a slew of contractors as to who is best for the job. We’re here to make the process easier for you.
Your cooling system is one of the biggest uses of energy in your home but it doesn’t have to be costly. A cooling system’s performance is measured by its efficiency or SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). The higher the SEER number the less energy it uses and the lower your energy bill.
Replacing an existing system
Like everything else in life, your air conditioner won’t last for ever, even if it did new equipment is quieter and much more efficient that what you probably have in your basement. If your air conditioner is more than 10 years old you may want to consider replacing it with a newer, higher efficiency model. You also need to consider the type of refrigerant your system uses, older systems use r22 which will no longer be manufactured after 2010. It will still be available but as supplies diminish, it will become more costly to purchase which means repair costs on your old system will also become more costly.
The new refrigerants like r410a provide the same cooling capacity of r22 but are more environmentally friendly. We have been installing r410 systems exclusively since 2007 and are fully trained and certified in the setup and handling of the new refrigerants. When you decide to switch to a new r410 system it’s important to make sure the contractor you hire has the training and experience to properly set up your new system so it runs properly.
That’s just one of the reasons that buying a new central air conditioner is not like buying any other appliance in your home. That’s because you can’t go to the local air conditioner showroom and buy one off the shelf. A contractor has to come to your home and evaluate your specific comfort needs to determine the type and size of air conditioner that’s right for your specific comfort needs.
Before giving you a quote to replace your air conditioner McSpadden Heating & Air, Inc. will come out to your home at no charge, and take a look at your old system. We’ll bring a laptop and collect information like the type and amount of insulation, size, type and number of windows and doors, etc. Then we’ll do a computerized heat/loss calculation (also referred to as a “Manual J”) that will tell us precisely what size air conditioner will make your home comfortable. It is not uncommon when evaluating your home to make recommendations as to ductwork modifications in order to make your new system work properly.
It is always important to do a heat/loss calculation before purchasing a new system. It is the only way to make sure the system is properly sized to your home’s environment. Any contractor that gives you a price estimate without performing the calculation is doing you a disservice. It has been our experience that most problems with new systems are directly related to mismatched or improperly sized equipment.
Once we have your specific home information, we’ll provide you with several solutions to best meet your comfort needs and give you a competitive price for each. Once you make your decision, we’ll schedule a time for our installation team to remove your old system and install the new one. In the process we’ll make sure your home remains as neat and clean as possible and if the installation takes more than 1 day, we’ll clean up everyday before we leave so that you never know we were there.
